In 1988, after completing my undergraduate degree at State University of New York - Fredonia, I started out buidling a piano studio that allowed a student to learn at their own pace. I decided that it would be important to accentuate what an individuals strengths are by using a combination of teaching styles. I had gone pretty far in my level of teaching, but had an innate understanding that really good repertoire and music were achievable at any level. I was pleased to discover the Snell Repertoire series, which I use extensively.
In piano teaching, there is a lot of buzz about how a student should learn. Whether a student should learn by ear or not. My understanding is that a student should use what God has given them. So if they have good ears, I encourage their ear training and playing by ear. If they are good at reading music, I encourage that, then. It amazes me when a student finally starts to progress simply because they’re using thier gifts.
